Fort Worth Sports & Entertainment

The cowboy theme runs strong and deep through Fort Worth's sports and entertainment venues, beginning with the downtown Sundance Square, a 16-block area with restaurants, nightclubs, live theatres, art galleries, stores and boutiques. Named for the outlaw Harry Longabaugh, alias The Sundance Kid, the area has helped revitalize downtown living in the city. Nearby is the Fort Worth Water Gardens, a 4.3 acre contemporary park with flowing water and charming pools. It is currently being renovated to make it safer for people to visit. Just north of downtown is the Fort Worth Stockyards, a remnant of what used to be one of the largest cattle pens in the U.S. It is now an entertainment district with western-style restaurants, bars, clothiers and gift shops. The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame is located in the Stockyards area, as is Billy Bob's, the world's largest honky tonk with mechanical bull riding, concerts by country and western stars, and the occasional indoor rodeo. Outside on the streets of the Stockyard you may catch a glimpse of what the Old West Longhorn cattle drives used to look like, as professional cowboys herd a few dozen of the big cows along. The Stockyards is also the only place in the world where jewelry and gift items can be purchased that are made from cow manure, albeit encased in clear plastic.

Turning 180 degrees from the Western theme is Fort Worth's cultural district that includes the Kimbell Art Museum, which houses works from antiquity through the 20th Century, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the oldest art museum in Texas, the Amon Carter Museum of 19th and 20th Century American art, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History which is one of the largest in the Southwest and contains both a planetarium and OmniMax theater, and the Will Rogers Memorial Center a multi-purpose entertainment center and equestrian complex under 45 acres of roof. It is the site of the 3-week January event known as the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, and draws some 800,000 attendees. Nearby is the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame honoring women of the Old West, and Casa Manana, the nation's first theater designed for musicals "in the round."

A short drive from the Cultural District is Fort Worth's parks district, home to the Fort Worth Zoo, one of the top 10 best zoos in the U.S., the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, the oldest such garden in Texas, the Fort Worth Japanese Garden and the Long Cabin Village with authentic Texas log cabins dating from the 1850s.

Professional sports events include the minor league Fort Worth Cats baseball team, the Fort Worth Brahmas of the Central Hockey League, and two minor league professional basketall teams, the Fort Worth Flyers and the Texas Tycoons. However, in the Fort Worth suburb of Arlington, approximately halfway to Dallas, is the Ball Park in Arlington, home to the MLB Texas Rangers of the American League. In 2009, professional football will come to Arlington when the NFL's Dallas Cowboys begin playing in their new $650 million home stadium. Each May, the Professional Golfer's Association pays a visit to Fort Worth for the Colonial Invitational, one of the oldest tournaments on the PGA Tour. The tournament honors the memory of legendary Texas golfer Ben Hogan and is played at the Colonial Country Club, a venue sometimes called "Hogan's Alley."

Twice yearly, NASCAR, America's most popular motorsports, pays a visit to the Texas Motor Speedway, just north of Fort Worth. The Fall race is part of NASCAR's 10-race chase for the Nextel Cup Championship. TMS also plays host to NASCAR's Craftsman Truck races and events from other motorsports leagues such as the IRL Indycars.

Finally, Fort Worth offers a wide selection of restaurants with cuisines ranging from Tex-Mex and barbecue to French, Italian and Asian.
